Helen Steiner Rice is famous for her uplifting and caring poems. These are to be found in books and greetings cards. Val produced the decorations, below, for 'Lovingly' which was first published by Hutchinson in 1971. As text and illustration are intimately bound together, to create a sense of completeness, some excerpts from the poems are also included below.

A Tribute to the Patron Saint of Love

Where there is love the heart is light
Where there is love the day is bright
Where there is love there is a song
To help when things are going wrong

for joy and merrymaking,
A time for gifts and presents,
for giving and for taking,
when everyone is gay -
But we have never really felt
the GREATNESS of the day...
